Our Studio

Studio Practices:

The studio is powered by Ecotricity so everything runs on renewable energy. Wherever possible office supplies, furniture and equipment have been sourced from sustainable producers or second-hand.

We are striving to be a paperless business, reducing paper use wherever we can. We use business cards very rarely and don’t print any leaflets (as these often head straight into the recycling) so please sign up to the newsletter or follow us on Instagram to stay in touch. Occasionally production notes need to be printed – we use primarily recycled paper in the studio, printed using a cartridge-free printer.

The presence of chemicals in the studio is limited as much as possible for our own wellbeing as well as for the environment – where rarely used they are disposed of responsibly. Many basic jewellery making techniques involve the use of products containing harmful chemicals but wherever a non-harmful, more natural alternative product exists, it has been chosen.

Packaging:

Our bags are made from certified responsibly sourced Kraft paper with woven paper cord handles - they are fully recyclable in your household recycling. Our boxes are constructed from board made of selected wood fibres which are coloured with non-toxic water-based pigments. They are coated in certified recycled paper. This wood box can be recycled at your local Household Waste Recycling Centre.

The insert inside the boxes is made of wool felt and in selected boxes there is also a linen/cotton mix band around the felt for fixing. You can recycle this natural fibre insert in your household recycling if they accept textiles or at your local larger recycling centre. We hope you will store your jewellery in its box.

Any orders send out by post are packaged in a 100% compostable mailing bag. Made from a combination of PBAT, a bio based polymer which is compostable, and PLA which is made up of plant materials such as regular field corn and wheat straw. It will break down within 90 days in commercial compost and 180 days in domestic compost conditions, including worm farm compost.

Studio Recycling:

Jewellers by nature are excellent recyclers – every spec of precious metal scrap and dust in the workshop that can be collected and recycled is meticulously gathered in a variety of ways.

Our studio is no different - we recycle as much precious metal scrap in-house as we can, melting it down and turning it into new usable resources. Anything which is not recyclable and reusable in-house is also carefully collected and periodically picked up by specialist precious metal refiners, who can extract the metals and return them to the industry for use.

In general the studio produces very little waste material and we avoid using anything which cannot be recycled after use. Waste materials are regularly taken to larger recycling centres if the standard municipal collections aren’t comprehensive enough for them.
